What this site is
Virginia Hospitality News covers the business of hospitality in Virginia: restaurants and bars, wineries, breweries and distilleries, hotels and resorts, and the farms that host visitors. It is written for the people who run them, not for the people who eat in them.
What we cover
The through line is the business, not the meal. Who is opening, who is selling, what it costs to staff a room, and which rule is about to change under you.
- Restaurants and openings. New rooms, closings, ownership changes and expansions, and the economics underneath them: menu pricing, cost lines, and what a market will actually bear.
- Alcohol. Virginia wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries, plus the ABC side of the business: license types, transfers, the food-to-beverage tiers and the MBAR.
- Agritourism. Farm wineries and limited breweries, event rules, and the county zoning fights that decide whether a tasting room can hold a wedding.
- Operations and people. Wages, tips, scheduling, hiring and the employment law that reaches every one of them. Hires, departures and industry recognition.
- Cannabis, hemp, tobacco and nicotine. THC limits, hemp retail registration, the retail tobacco permit and the nicotine vapor directory. Three regulated categories that land on the same operator in the same week.
- Compliance, policy and enforcement. The ten bodies that can cite a Virginia hospitality business, what they cite for, what it costs, and the General Assembly bills and local ordinances that change the answers.
Why one publication
Virginia has good restaurant writing, and several outlets cover openings well. What it has not had is a publication that treats the operator's whole problem as one beat.
An operator's month is not divided the way coverage is. The meals tax rate, the minimum wage step, the county's new event cap, the ABC ratio, the health inspection and the tobacco permit all arrive at the same desk. They are usually covered by different people in different places, when they are covered at all. Splitting them up is how the gaps happen.
The reference pages here, the bill tracker, the enforcement index and the source list, exist because that information is public, scattered, and written for lawyers rather than for the person who has to act on it.
How we report
Every reported story links to its primary sources at the bottom of the page: the bill text, the ABC notice, the filing, the press release. If a story rests on a single source, it says so. If we get something wrong, we correct it in place with a dated update note rather than quietly editing the text.

This site carries no advertising. If that changes, paid placements will be labeled plainly, and anything promoting a business connected to the people who run this publication will say so on its face.
No advertiser will ever see a story before it publishes or have any say in what we cover.
